Eric Gales has returned. The embattled chief executive has landed the country manager post at Amazon Web Services’ (AWS) Canadian subsidiary.
When we last checked in with Gales he left the role of VMware Canada GM in July of this year.
His departure from VMware Canada came about through VMware’s decision to embarked on a North American regional structure, which left the Canadian subsidiary without a country manager. Gales actually worked on the transition before he departed.
The highly popular Gales joins AWS Canada and director will be his official title. Amazon has been providing Web services offerings in Canada since 2005, but this will be the first time it has established roots in the country.
Before joining VMware, Gales was the President of Microsoft Canada.
The appointment of Gales comes at time when AWS acquires Elemental Technologies, Inc., a vendor in software-defined video solutions market specific for multiscreen content delivery. The acquisition brings together Elemental’s video solutions with the AWS Cloud platform for its media and entertainment offerings.
And, AWS just made available Amazon Aurora, a MySQL-compatible database engine with open source databases, to Canada and the rest of the world. AWS announced that more than a 1,000 customers ranging from global enterprises down to start-ups participated in the Aurora preview before launch.
