Asigra Inc., demonstrated true cloud backup and recovery of Microsoft Exchange at the 2011 Storage Networking World (SNW) conference.
In the SNIA Hands-on-Lab, IT professionals performed cloud backup by remotely accessing the Exchange servers residing in Toronto using laptops from the SNIA lab in Santa Clara, Calif. The backed up data was stored on storage hardware located in Mountain View, Calif. Lab participants then deleted information to simulate a loss event and perform Message Level Recovery (MLR) of the lost Exchange data from their storage vault in Mountain View back to the primary Exchange servers in Toronto to demonstrate true distributed cloud infrastructure across geographies.
Asigra Inc., alongside solution providers OutSource IT, KnowledgeCentrix, and Dakota Backup performed this demo.
Cloud backup is specialized backup technology for protecting data by transmitting a copy of the data over a proprietary or public network to a public or private backup vault. In a public cloud implementation, the vault is usually managed by a third-party service provider, who charges the end-user organization a fee based on capacity. Larger organizations that build a private backup cloud typically deploy a proprietary vault which serves as the central backup repository for distributed enterprise backup. In conjunction storage hardware and services delivered through channel partners, Asigra technology can deliver cloud backup capabilities enabling customers to economize and modernize their backup processes, said Ashar Baig, senior director of product marketing, Asigra.
He added that more organizations are choosing Asigra for their backup and recovery needs because the technology enables them to intelligently leverage the advantages of the cloud. This provides organizations with the control, efficiency and cost-effectiveness they need to securely protect information assets.
