LAS VEGAS: The annual Consumer Electronics Showcase is underway in Las Vegas, with the usual slew of new products and famous faces taking centre-stage as the IT world descends on Sin City.
Microsoft Corp. (NASDAQ: MSFT) CEO Steve Ballmer kicked off the event with the company’s usual CES-Eve keynote, which he used to highlight some new form factor devices coming later in the year that will be running Windows 7. But it was Robbie Bach that took centre-stage, as the president of Microsoft’s entertainment and devices group announced a holiday 2010 availability for Project Natal, a wireless gesture-based gaming controller for the Xbox.
Lenovo Corp. used CES to show-off the IdeaPad U1, a convertible notebook that splits into two to function as a multi-touch slate tablet device. The company hopes the new form factor device can be a game-changer in the competitive notebook market.
Finally, Sony CEO Howard Stringer brought in Sony Music recording artist Taylor Swift to help him launch 12 new HDTV designs for 2010. The centerpiece of the launch is Sony’s new 3D capability for select new HDTVs and Blu-Ray players, which was used to broadcast Taylor’s performance in 3D for the CES audience.
