HardwareMobility

Dell Computer Corp. is making an attempt to raised the computing bar with the newly designed XPS 18.

The Round Rock, Tex.-based vendor said it tried to produce a product with the right blend of weight, large display size and performance in a thin, portable device. The company believes there is a market for a device that provides mobile entertainment and desktop-level productivity.

The XPS 18 comes with an 18.4-inch full HD capacitive touch display is meant to be transported through the working environment.

Dell claims the XPS 18 to boast a number of firsts such as its weight at just 4.85 lbs with an optional SSD drive, the XPS 18 is less than half the weight of other currently available portable All-in-One devices in Dell’s current line up. Dell says it has nearly double the battery life offering up to five hours of run time between charges. The 18.4-inch full HD touchscreen is more than three times the screen size of comparable tablets. One of Dell’s design goals was to make the XPS 18 light enough to hand back and forth, but the screen is large for more than one person to watch videos, share content or utilize as a dual-player gaming unit.

The XPS 18 is based on third-generation Intel Core processors and Windows 8 operating system.

The XPS 18 features an aluminum back finish with soft grip for traction. It comes with a wireless keyboard and mouse and its flexible design allows it to be used in a variety of ways for the most comfortable viewing angle: on an optional powered stand for ‘walk up’ computing; on any flat surface using the built-in flip-out feet; laid flat for sharing; or held on your lap for reading and browsing.

Kirk Schell, vice president, Consumer PC Group for Dell, said the XPS 18 will change the way people define and use a PC today. Everyone who uses it is shocked and amazed at how light it is and comfortable to use in a variety of settings. By combining the performance, versatility and space-saving design of a traditional All-in-One with an ultra-thin and light touch display and unmatched battery life, we’re giving customers a whole new computing experience that can go anywhere.

The product will also come with the Dell Wyse PocketCloud application pre-installed on the XPS 18. This product helps users build personal cloud and remotely manage personal and professional content.

The XPS 18 is priced at $899.99.
