Dell Inc. has unveiled a new entry-level client solution compatible with virtual environments.
The Wyse 3040 is the company’s “lightest, smallest and most power-efficient thin client” that is meant for multitasking within virtual workspace environments.
Weighing just 0.24 kg (0.53 lbs), the device is the first of its kind to feature an Intel Atom X5 1.44GHz quad-core processor that supports “up to 2GB DDR3 RAM and 8GB flash.”
It is compatible with all major virtualization software, including Citrix XenDesktop, Microsoft RDS and VMware Horizon. It also supports Citrix HDX, Microsoft RDP and PCoIP protocols, and will support VMware Blast Extreme remote protocol starting in June 2017.
“Our customers are looking for that ideal blend of security, performance, energy efficiency and price,” Steve Lalla, senior vice president of commercial client software and solutions at Dell, says in a press release on Mar. 28. “The new Wyse 3040 thin client – the smallest and most efficient thin client – exceeds expectations of what an entry-level thin client can do.”
Offering 30 per cent better performance than previous generations, the Wyse 3040 is “ideal for light multimedia use and local application activity,” Dell says. Additionally, its small size makes it easy to mount of the back of a monitor for a more de-cluttered workspace.
The device comes with Wyse ThinOS software, which is not only virus-resistant but also “ultra-secure with no published APIs and therefore no attack surface.” Customers will also get the option of Wyse ThinLinux, a thin client-optimized software based on SUSE Linux, starting in June 2017.
The Wyse 3040 supports a wide range of attachments for network connectivity, dual digital display (2560×1600), and includes two DisplayPort interfaces and four USB ports – one of which is USB 3.1 Gen 1 for high speed connectivity.
Dell also offers on-prem/off-prem and auto management software options for scaling up to tens of thousands of devices, as well as device and cloud managers to help with configuration and management.
The Wyse 3040 is now available globally starting at US$329, and in Canada for CA$440 with a three-year warranty.
