As Shared Services Canada continues with its mandate to consolidate federal government IT services and procurement, another major contract has been awarded.
BCE Inc’s Bell Canada and CGI Information Systems have won a $398 million, seven year contract to run the federal government’s consolidated email system.
According to a report from Howard Solomon of IT World Canada, the deal, won by competitive bidding, is part of the federal government’s Email Transformation Initiative, which calls for 14 per cent of public servants to be on the new system by March 2014, and the rest 12 months later. The new system will replace 63 separate email systems used across 43 departments.
Others in the running for the contract included groups headed by Dell Canada, HP Canada and IBM Canada.
