Intel’s CEO expected to be promoted from within

When Intel Corp. (NASDAQ: INTC) CEO Paul Otellini retires from the top job at the processor giant in May, expect to see him be replaced by an internal candidate.

According to a report from Bloomberg, the outgoing Intel CEO told a conference this week that, while it’s not his call, he’s very comfortable with the internal candidates for his job and the time it would take to bring an external hire into Intel’s corporate culture and business augers in favour of an internal hire.

Intel has never brought in an external candidate to take its top job. Among the possible internal frontrunners according to the report are COO Brian Krzanich, CFO Stacy Smith and software head Renee James, who were all made executive vice-presidents when Otellini announced his departure plans.
