Hoping to extend its market reach, Mozy, an EMC Corp (NASDAQ: EMC) company, last week announced a partnership which brings its online data backup service to all Lenovo ThinkPad SL series of notebooks.
The Mozy online backup solution is designed for anyone who uses a computer, Vance Checketts, COO at Mozy, said. The software is a lightweight application that continuously works and backs up files in the background. In the event of a power failure, natural disaster, theft or hard drive crash, Checketts says all user files are saved and sent to Mozy’s data centres around the world.
“These data centres are top-notch and are professionally managed and highly reliable storage centres for data,” Checketts said. “Regardless of what happens (the customers’) data is always going to be safe.”
Although EMC acquired Mozy last year, the American Fork, Utah-based company still maintains its own brand, partners, customer support and technical operations team. Before striking up a partnership to offer its online backup service as a free 90-day trial on all Lenovo SL notebooks, Checketts said partners were selling the Mozy online backup solution as more of an add-on solution to end-users. Channel partners are now able to leverage this solution to provide more value-add to their customers, Checketts explained.
Depending on the sales scenario, Checketts said channel partners are able to achieve at the highest, 20-plus margins with the online backup solution. Now that this solution is shipping with selected Lenovo notebooks, geared towards small business professionals, Checketts said the company hopes to gain more ground on a global basis.
“This will extend the reach of the software,” he said. “The price point of Mozy is pretty palatable for just about anyone. At its base price and directly from us, (customers) only pay US$3.95 a month for a licence to use the software, and a 50 cent charge per month per gigabyte.”
Features of the Mozy online data backup solution include unlimited online backup capacity, open and locked file support, bandwidth throttling and privately managed encryption. With Lenovo’s SL series of notebooks, end-users will receive a free three-month trial of the solution with up to 5GB of storage capacity. Once the trial is up, Checketts said end-users have the option of purchasing the solution.
Checketts said the online backup service solution is currently available and will soon be able to support seven languages which include, English, French, German, Italian, Spanish, Universal Spanish and Brazilian Portuguese.
