Seagate goes rugged

Seagate Technology extended its portfolio of storage products built for extreme environments with the launch of the second-generation Seagate EE25 Series hard disc drive.

The hard drive maker is calling this new product a breakthrough in design for digital storage in extreme environment applications, delivering up to 80 Gbs of reliable storage in hostile temperature, vibration, humidity, shock and altitude conditions. In addition, Seagate is bringing the SATA interface to extreme environment applications.

The EE25 Series drives support applications such as entertainment, information and navigation systems for commercial aircraft, automobiles and marine vessels along with ruggedized PCs and equipment that is exposed to high vibration and temperature.

Patrick King, senior vice president and general manager of Seagate’s consumer electronics business unit, said the digitization of information brings new challenges and new opportunities, and a number of applications have emerged that require rugged storage devices to safeguard vital data. We’re seeing this growth in a wide range of vertical markets such as commercial in-flight entertainment systems field equipment.
