Sun Microsystems launches new identity compliance solution

Sun Microsystems announced the immediate availability of its Identity Compliance Manager software solution, designed for enterprises that are looking to address compliance regulations.

Mathew Hamlin, senior product manager for Sun Microsystems, said the new solution aims to target the company’s existing and new customer bases.

“We see Identity Compliance Manager as a way for businesses to get into the IT automated and identity management space,” he said. “By automating controls and gathering information about individuals across the enterprise, business owners can understand who’s in the organization and what individual has access to what roles and data.”

The identity management market is driven by three key factors, Hamlin explains. These drivers include regulations and acts such as Canada’s Personal Information Protection and Electronic Documents Act (PIPEDA), wanting to increase identity management control to help mitigate risk, and automating and aggregating access certification and information across the enterprise.

Sun’s new solution allows end-users to automate controls and create reports and audits to ensure their businesses stay compliant.

With the solution, business owners are also able to define roles and segregate duties with scanning and enforcement to give access to information and roles only to those individuals who need them. By automating and having control of identity and access data processes across the enterprise, Hamlin says business owners can view audit trails and have better visibility across their organization.

“Compliance is at the forefront of many identity management products today and customers are looking at ways to prove and automate their controls,” Hamlin said.

The solution, which sits at a base price of $75,000, is available now through Sun’s channel community of system integrators (SIs) and other resellers worldwide.

Regarding the company’s identity suite of offerings, Hamlin says solutions such as this one are most popular in verticals such as financial institutions, telcos, healthcare and government.

“From an identity management standpoint and from what I’ve heard about up in Canada, Canada is a bit of a later adopter than most U.S. firms,” Hamlin said. “The ones in Canada who are looking to build out on these processes, are looking to do so fairly rapidly.”

While the software solution can be sold with Sun’s other point products, or along with the entire identity management suite, Hamlin says subscription-based pricing is also available to end-users.

When asked if Identity Compliance Manager will ever be offered as a software-as-a-service (SaaS) sale by it or its partners, Hamlin says the company currently does not have any partners deploying the product this way. However, that’s not to say the company will refuse an opportunity should it present itself, he says.

“We’re open to resellers doing that (SaaS) too,” he adds.
