Symantec stumbles, drops further behind EMC

Chris Mellor writes about EMC and Symantec’s storage software market share results.
“The gap between EMC and Symantec storage software revenues is widening, according to IDC’s worldwide quarterly Storage Software Tracker. For the second quarter of this year, Symantec’s revenues of $488M were 67.6 per cent of EMC’s $722M. A year ago, at $524M they were 82.1 per cent of EMC’s $638M. IDC says EMC and Symantec ranked first and second respectively in the market for storage software this quarter.”
Android to control half of smartphone market, say analysts

Larry Dignan takes a look at the mobile operating system market.
“A bevy of Android devices will ultimately mean that Google’s mobile operating system will control largely half of the smartphone market, according to a Piper Jaffray report. Apple’s iOS will probably top out with market share of 20 percent to 30 percent in the long run. The big picture? Android and Apple will squeeze rivals such as Nokia and Research in Motion, according to the Piper Jaffray report. These also-rans will duke it out for the 20 percent share left on the table.”
HP Mini 5103 with dual-core Atom N550 performance review

Joanna Stern shares some details about HP’s Mini 5103 netbook.
“Like the (HP Mini) 5102, the 5103 is still primarily aimed at business professionals. In fact, HP hardly messed with the look and feel of the aluminum dressed laptop — the chassis and features are pretty much the exact same, although HP did ditch the black lid for an ‘Espresso’ colour and preload some new ‘Day Starter’ instant-on OS. Obviously, the big deal here is the new processor and seeing as how we’ve been waiting on Intel to release a dual-core Atom CPU for netbooks since well, the first netbook we were eager to see how much power that extra core adds and if it impacts battery life.”
