Calgary-based RMS Solutions is helping protect the environment directly by enabling its clients to avoid harmful and toxic fuel spills.
The company, a developer of integrated software solutions, serves retailers with point-of-sale software, governments with Web data applications and large businesses with e-commerce solutions, but made its green splash by helping marina operators and independent petroleum marketers combat environmentally-dangerous gas leaks.
The software solution RMS developed, called the RMS Fuel Management System, provides reports that are able to measure, in real time, the contents of a fuel tank to 1/1000 of a gallon. Such an exception report allows the operator to know whether the system has been shut off and gas has been stolen, or-the worst case scenario-a leak has occurred.
This automated system replaces a manual one using dipsticks and prone to human error, suggests Thomas Viccars, president of RMS Solutions. Initially the software has deployed in marinas in the U.S., and Viccars says they are starting to roll out in Canada.
“Green is an issue definitely. Marinas are very sensitive areas that they operate from and so that makes [the environment] even more of a consideration.”
The software works as well for land-locked fuel stations, as well as for alternative fuels, like bio-fuels, not just gas and diesel.
As well as helping its customers better monitor their fuel tanks, Viccars says that developing a comprehensive fuel management system has afforded RMS a unique niche in the market.
