U.S. firm rolls out big data cloud service in Canada

Colorado-based cloud content storage management (CSM) solutions provider Front Porch Digital has opened a new private cloud platform hub in Ontario that will provide big data cloud storage to firms in major Canadian centres.

The company’s Lynx superhub CSM platform is a scalable, secure high-performance cloud-based service specially designed for media organization but is also flexible enough to address the needs of enterprise, government, oil and gas, medical imaging and other sectors, according to Front Porch Digital. The superhub has multiple backbone connections to several Canadian cities such as Toronto, Calgary, Vancouver, Montreal, Ottawa, Halifax and Winnipeg.

The enterprise grade CSM-as-a-Service offering is available as a private cloud-only service or as a hybrid of on-premise and cloud-based storage and integration solutions.

It has the ability to scale from 50 Terabytes of storage to multiple Petabytes “with near-immediate and protected accesses to all assets,” according to the company.

The U.S. cloud firm already has a presence in Canada with more than 25 of its DIVArchive on-premise CSM system currently storing and protecting 30 Petabytes of data in various installations in major media organization but Lynx expands the company’s data storage service offerings, according to Brian Campanotti, chief technology officer for the Front Porch Digital.

Its clients in Canada include, CHUM Ltd and Corus Networks Entertainment and Musique Plus. The company also serves Al Jazeera, the United States Library of Congress, Hong Kong Cable TV Ltd and the British Broadcasting Corp.

“Ours is the first object-centric, big data storage service to launch in Canada, and it has a broad appeal beyond media and entertainment,” he said in a statement.

Lynx is designed to handle large file-based collections and leverages Archive eXchange Format (AXF) as an open standard for object-based transport, storage, protection and preservation. AXP is an open format that supports interoperability among disparate content storage systems irrespective of operating and file systems used.

Lynx services are available at a fraction of the cost of competing solutions and offer more robust service level agreements (SLAs), according to the company.

Base-level SLAs for Lynx include redundant copies of all data transferred to the Front Porch Digital private data center; encrypted and UDP-accelerated WAN/private connectivity; automatic proxy generation for all media content; and a Web-based, secure, SaaS-based media asset management interface for content browsing, searching, and access.

Lynx also provides all of the features, functionality, and deep device integration offered by DIVArchive.
