Video: Indy 500 champ on how technology is changing motor sports

GLENDALE, CALIF. — Former Indy 500 champion auto racer Gil De Ferran says there was a time when, as a driver, he was his own data acquisition system. Those days are long gone.

On hand for Hewlett-Packard Co.‘s (NYSE: HPQ) refresh of its Z-series workstations at a media event last week at DreamWorks Animations SKG, De Ferran spoke about how information technology is changing everything from how a car is designed to the decisions a driver and his team make on race day and even during a race.

Now retired from racing, De Ferran is president and managing partner of Luczo Dragon Racing, which is sponsored by HP. The team is using HP technology across the board, from enhancing parts design to data collection, storage, analysis, simulation and optimization.
