WebSense has unveiled Data Discover, a network-based product, which plugged into a port of a switch, can scan desktops and file servers to identify sensitive information.
Offered as either an appliance or software that can be installed on HP or IBM servers, WebSense Data Discover uses “fingerprinting” technology to compare sensitive data discovered in any data storehouse, according to Dave Meizlik, senior product marketing manager at WebSense.
“It’s looking for confidential data, such as source code or intellectual property,” says Meizlik, adding that once it identifies sensitive information on desktops or servers, it will report back on it so it can be manually removed, if necessary.
Data Discover is also a feature of the larger WebSense Data Security Suite 6.5 for data-loss prevention. WebSense decided to make the data-discovery component in the Suite a standalone product as well. Priced starting at US$8,750, Data Discover is available now.
