HUB Computer Solutions was first started as a part-time venture back in 1989 when founders Alan Davison and Troy McLennan were working in the Test Engineering department of the Nortel Networks manufacturing facility located in Winnipeg’s north end. Their passion for leading-edge technologies and exceptional problem solving skills naturally led them into the field of information technology.
Rotating shift-work at Nortel allowed the two young entrepreneurs to provide IT services for local small businesses during their “spare time” and also allowed them to take evening courses in business management to develop their management skills.
The two of us worked out of a cramped spare bedroom in Alan's north-end home. We started with an old banquet table, two folding chairs, a couple phones and two IBM PCs. Welcome to the glamorous world of owning your own IT company :) – Troy McLennan
In 1991 HUB’s client base was growing steadily and when Nortel moved their manufacturing facility from Winnipeg to Calgary, Alan and Troy chose to remain in Winnipeg and began operating HUB as a full time enterprise.
There is a lot of risk in starting your own business and a lot of long days, but it was the best choice we could have made. It has given us a first-hand understanding of what issues our clients face every day when trying to grow and improve their business. It also has reinforced our understanding of the crucial role that the right technology and process can play in helping them reach their business objectives. Those lessons have profoundly shaped our business focus and the value we provide our clients today - we make business better with Smarter IT. – Alan Davison
As the company has grown over the years, the two owners have fostered a company culture of smart, caring people who share their same passion for building long lasting relationships with clients, understanding their objectives, and improving their business with high-quality, meaningful IT solutions and services.
After 25+ years, Alan and Troy are still in actively leading the company today. HUB currently has 19 employees and is growing, with over 100 active clients throughout Manitoba, across Canada and the United States.
In 2016, HUB was chosen out of hundreds of IT providers across Canada and was awarded the CDN Channel Elite Award in the category of Best IT Service Organization.
