BenQ working on Android smartphone and netbook for next year
Engadget
Laura June writes that when BenQ releases a new handset next year, it will probably support Android.
“Yup, the company is jumping on the bandwagon, adding itself to the growing number of ‘droid mobile makers, hoping to get itself back into the game with the new and ever more popular OS. Most of BenQ’s netbooks currently run XP (some also boast a Linux option), so the added Android option will make a nice addition to the family.”
A Dash Of Navigation Software In Your Next Blackberry
TechCrunch
Leena Rao writes that Research In Motion has just acquired GPS vendor, Dash Navigation for an undisclosed amount.
“RIM refused to comment on how Dash will be incorporated into its business but it’s safe to assume that the company will use Dash’s technology to upgrade the GPS in their devices in some capacity. Dash’s technology does give RIM some important mapping and car navigation technologies, many of which can be applied more broadly to cell phones.”
Storage revenues slip sliding away
The Register
Chris Mellor writes that according to research firm IDC, storage spending is down and some storage market vendors are now losing market share to Dell and Hitachi.
“The report, IDC’s Worldwide Quarterly Disk Storage Systems Tracker for the first quarter of 2009, shows an 18.2 per cent decline in total disk storage systems revenue to $5.6 billion from a year ago. Within that the external disk storage systems portion declined 13.6 per cent to $4.2 billion. Dell is doing a lot better relatively than everyone else. Hitachi is having a good quarter and NetApp is also doing quite well, while HP and IBM are losing revenue market share. EMC’s picture is mixed. It lost share in the total external disk storage systems market but gained it in the total disk storage systems market, presumably as more direct-attached storage capacity moved into the external storage category.”
