BlackBerry OS update to bring FM radio, picture passwords

Mobility

Picture passwords and listening to local FM radio stations without using the data connection are among the new features BlackBerry is rolling out in the latest update of its BlackBerry 10 OS, 10.2.1.

The update will begin rolling out today, subject to carrier approvals, across the range of BlackBerry 10 devices. Some users may need to wait longer depending on their carrier; users will receive a notification with they’re able to download the update.

Among the features Blackberry is touting in 10.2.1 are more customization features for BlackBerry Hub, easier gestures for answering or ignoring a call and the ability to instantly send a BBM, SMS or e-mail to the contact with an automated response when you ignore a call, the ability to create SMS and e-mail groups, actionable lock screen notifications, a picture password option for quicker unlocking, a customizable quick settings menu, an offline browser reading mode, more options for contact synching, an improved device and battery monitor to keep an eye on your power and resource-draining applications, and the update will also unlock the FM radio built into the Z30, Q10 and Q5 so users can listen to local FM radio stations – no network connection required.

Finally, for enterprise users with BES 10 version 10.2, the update provides more granular security features and IT policies for regulated industries, and companies that deal with sensitive data.
