Dell Corp. (NASDAQ: DELL) has joined the ranks of public cloud providers, launching a service called Dell Cloud Storage with Nirvanix with service provider Nirvanix. As Joseph F. Kovar of CRN reports, it was a low-key launch and the role for channel partners is currently unclear:
Dell put information introducing its new Dell Cloud Storage with Nirvanix — Public Service on its website but otherwise did not make a formal announcement, instead leaving its partner Nirvanix to spread the work. A Dell spokesperson declined to provide any more details of its new public cloud storage service other than to say that the company is currently working on a channel program.

Dell boss Michael Dell spoke about the cloud recently at the VMworld conference in San Francisco. Dell told attendees that collaboration is occurring across time zones and geographies, enabling new models of work. At Dell, for example, there are three types of employees: remote workers, those who occasionally come into the office, and those who work in a traditional office environment.
“Increasingly it’s the first two categories,” said Dell. The boundaries that separated firms are also coming down, particularly in the supply chain. But, he cautioned, this has to be done securely. “This is a real security challenge.
