Hewlett-Packard Co. (NYSE: HPQ) is the latest manufacturer to jump on the 3D notebook bandwagon with its upcoming release of the Envy 17 3D laptop.
Other PC vendors such as Asus, Lenovo and Toshiba have already come out with 3D laptops, making HP the latest vendor to do so. But consumers will have to wait to get their hands on the Envy 17 3D laptop as it won’t be available until December 5.
Sherief Ibrahim, product manager of consumer notebooks for HP Canada’s personal systems group, said the target customers for HP’s first 3D laptop will be power users, customers who want to watch movies and play games in 3D and for those who want the “latest and greatest” in what technology has to offer.
As its name suggests, the Envy 17 3D laptop will feature a 17.3-inch screen, and will come with speakers and a subwoofer. Because of its size, HP’s Envy 17 3D laptop is designed to be a desktop replacement. The laptop offers up to 2TB of storage capacity and runs Intel Core i7 quad-core processors and also comes with AMD’s ATI Mobility Radeon HD 5850 graphics card. The Envy 17 3D notebook will also be able to play Blu-Ray movies.
A pair of 3D 120 hertz active shutter glasses will also come with the laptop to view content in 3D.
“Instead of relying on software to play tricks on your eyes, our glasses are flickering up and down and side to side at a rapid speed, so you get a much more natural 3D experience,” Ibrahim said.
The laptop can also switch to 2D mode for users to view regular content.
Built with an aluminum magnesium casing, Ibrahim said the notebook’s dark gray finish has a sleek look that also is more fingerprint resistant.
The device is expected to launch at most Canadian retailers, HP channel partners and thru HP’s online store starting the week of December 5. Pricing for the laptop will be an MSRP of $1999.99.
