Since splitting into two independent public companies earlier this year, Motorola Mobility and Motorola Solutions, the former is looking forward to the upcoming launch of its Atrix 4G smartphone with Bell Mobility as it works to bring a combined smartphone and PC browsing experience to users.
In March 2008, Motorola’s board of directors approved a split into two different publicly traded companies. Almost two years later, Motorola announced its separation, which would go into effect in the first quarter of this year (January 4).
Rick Gadd, vice-president of sales at Motorola Mobility, said since the two business units split, the company has “seen a great start to 2011” thus far.
One of the reasons behind the split was to “allow each part of the company to focus on what it does best,” Gadd explained. “Motorola Mobility inherits the original company’s mobile handset and home businesses, positioning Motorola Mobility to capitalize on the emerging trend toward converged experiences. Motorola Solutions inherits the wireless network infrastructure and rugged two-way radio businesses.”
At the Consumer Electronics Show held in Las Vegas last month, Motorola Mobility and Bell launched its Motorola Atrix 4G smartphone device. The smartphone comes with a full-size keyboard and trackpad and runs on Android 2.2, with access to more than 100,000 applications and games in the Android Market. The Motorola Atrix also comes with a webtop application that enables users to have a desktop browser experience, using Mozilla Firefox 3.6, right on their mobile device. The phone also comes with a dual-core processor that can deliver up to 2GHz of processing power and 1GB of RAM.
Sanjay Jha, chairman and CEO of Motorola Mobility, said the Atrix brings a “new era of mobile computing and converged electronics experiences” to the market place.
“Atrix is a revolutionary tool for staying connected, informed and entertained at home, on the job and anywhere in between,” Jha said.
Gadd said he anticipates the Atrix launch with Bell will mean a strong year for the company.
“We’re looking forward to a really strong year, including our upcoming Atrix launch with Bell, bringing consumers a true convergence mobile and computing experience,” Gadd said.
The Motorola Atrix will be made available exclusively to customers in Canada thru Bell in the coming months.
