New Wikileaks cables detail Apple’s struggle with Chinese counterfeiting
ZDNet
Zack Whittaker reports that Apple has been too slow to react to counterfeiting in Asia.
“In March 2008, Apple organised a team to counter the sudden boom of counterfeit Apple goods, from iPhones to iPods, according to a cable from the U.S. Embassy in Beijing, dated September 2008. But three years on, and with the recent reporting of fake Apple stores in major Chinese cities, progress has been slow, and Beijing does not see the piracy issue as a ‘high priority’.”
Seven lessons from the HP Touchpad fire sale
The Register
Jon Collins looks at what companies can learn from the HP experience.
“Anyone who says they expected the fire sale of HP touchpads to turn into a global gadget grab is a liar. Fortunately nobody has yet, not publicly anyway – indeed, apart from a few bits of coverage complaining about website crashes and HP’s risky strategy , there hasn’t been that much written about it at all.”
Rumour has it: Is Samsung looking to buy webOS from HP?
The VAR Guy
Dave Courbanou report on a dubious rumour that might be a good idea.
“Currently, Samsung is embroiled in a battle with Apple over a multitude of patent and look and feel issues regarding Samsung’s hardware and software that look a little bit too much like the iPhone, iPad and iOS for Apple’s taste. I personally don’t understand Apple’s reasons — Samsung devices wouldn’t be easily confused for Apple devices — but I can see where Samsung’s offerings have some similarities where other Android devices don’t. I believe Apple is attacking Samsung to put the fear in other device manufacturers to make sure their wares are distinctly different from Apple’s.”
