Is the iPad the fastest selling consumer electronic device ever?
Network World
Yoni Heisler writes about the success of Apple’s iPad sales.
“In the midst of booming iPad sales, one interesting data point is that the iPad may very well be the fastest selling consumer electronic product of all time. To put things in perspective, Apple sold about 3.27 million iPads during the third quarter of 2010, and estimates for the current quarter range from 3.8 million units on the low end to upwards of 6 million units. By way of comparison, DVD players, during the first quarter of their availability, only moved around 350,000 units. Further putting things into perspective, DVDs were out on the market for five years before its sales were comparable to where iPad sales are just a few months out.”
Cisco’s umi gets panned

Jim Duffy shares some perspective about the Cisco umi solution from research firm, Parks Associate.
“Cisco’s umi costs $600 for equipment plus a recurring charge of $25 per month, on top of what consumers already pay their service provider for broadband Internet access. Indeed, umi currently will appeal to only a very specific niche market of people who find Skype and other freebies inadequate for their videochatting needs – a subset of that 20 per cent Parks Associates cites that use webcams and ‘dirt-cheap’ videoconferencing.”
