Microsoft Research hires Canadian
Redmond, Wash. — Bill Buxton, a Toronto-based computer scientist and designer specializing in the human aspects of technology, has joined Microsoft Research as a senior researcher.
Buxton will collaborate with the company’s research teams around the world in areas like the use of technology to support creative activities such as design, filmmaking and music.
Prior to joining Microsoft, Buxton was principal of his own Toronto-based design and consulting firm as well as chief scientist at Bruce Mau Design Inc. He is also an associate professor in the computer science department at the University of Toronto.
Last Mile Communications appoints Turner
Exeter, U.K. — Robert Turner has been appointed chairman of Last Mile Communications’ board of directors.
Anthony Abell, CEO and joint founder of the U.K.-based developer of software and hardware for wireless location-based information services said, “(Turner’s) knowledge of telecommunications and links to potential investors will bring the company to the next level.”
As chairman, Turner will represent the company’s aims and policies globally while providing leadership to the board of directors to ensure its effectiveness in setting and implementing corporate direction and strategy.
Richardson to leave Nortel
TORONTO — After 18 months as Nortel Network’s chief marketing officer, Clent Richardson, will be leaving his post as of March 1.
His decision to leave the telecommunications company is based on personal reasons. At press time the firm had not announced a replacement.
