Flash storage vendor Pure Storage recently announced a suite of new cloud offerings that run on Amazon Web Services (AWS).
As companies try to run applications in the cloud and data centre simultaneously, hybrid architectures are becoming the new norm. But many customers still find themselves having to choose which applications should move to the cloud and which ones should stay on premises.
“Today, there exists a cloud divide – the cloud is not purpose-built for enterprise applications, and enterprise infrastructure isn’t as user-friendly as the cloud,” said Charles Giancarlo, chairman and CEO for Pure Storage. “Customers should be able to make infrastructure choices based on what’s best for their environment, not constrained by what the technology can do or where it lives. Today’s announcement extends Pure’s data centric architecture to the cloud, allowing our customers to build hybrid applications that provide true mobility and freedom.”
This is what Pure Storage is rolling out:
- Cloud Block Store for AWS: A block storage systems that uses Pure Storage’s software to run natively on AWS. Currently in limited beta.
- CloudSnap for AWS: A data protection service built into Pure FlashArray, and FlashArray snapshots are sent to AWS S3 storage. CloudSnap is generally available.
- StorReduce: Deduplication technology that backs up to AWS S3 storage.
Sabina Joseph, head of global partnerships and alliances, digital innovation and storage, HPC solutions for AWS, described Pure Storage’s latest announcement as a “uniquely differentiated” offering.
“Pure has built upon the reliable base of AWS storage offerings to create value-add features and help enterprise applications to work across on-premises and AWS,” she said in a statement.
Frank Gens, senior vice-president and chief analyst for IDC agreed.
“With these new cloud-native products, Pure Storage has given its customers the power of and, not or, the ability to leverage innovation across the cloud,” he said. “Now, customers can build the right data architecture for the future of their business by allowing for hybrid cloud agility that puts data at the heart of IT strategy.”
