Microsoft’s insulting offer for Yahoo Search
Valleywag
Owen Thomas looks at how much Microsoft recently offered Yahoo for its search business.
“Microsoft offered $1 billion to take Yahoo’s search business off its hands, along with a buyback and other details. Henry Blodget has a detailed financial analysis of why Yahoo walked. But why spend all that effort? Rumor had had Microsoft offering $21 billion for Yahoo’s search business a few weeks ago; it had already offered to pay $44.6 billion for the whole company.”
Sharp pitches ‘world’s largest’ LCD screen
The Register
Tony Smith writes about Sharp’s new offering of making built-to-order 108-inch screen-size LCD TVs available.
“Sharp…is now taking orders for a monster 108-inch screen ready for connection to your HD kit. Sharp’s not saying how much the beast will set you back because it’s offering the display entirely on a built-to-order basis. It’s really aimed at businesses who want enormo-screens for conference rooms, shopping centres and the like.”
Court rules that selling promo CDs is perfectly legal
Techdirt
Mike Masnick shares the results of a recent court ruling involving the sale of promotional CDs.
“There was a big win for copyright and the concept of the first sale doctrine today, as a court has ruled that record labels cannot stop the sale of a promo CD just because it’s stamped with a message that says ‘not for resale.’ This is a big victory, as a loss would mean that content providers could basically create their own copyright rules for any content they sold, potentially limiting it in much greater ways than copyright already does.”
