Socializing Your UC Strategy
Network World
Irwin Lazar writes how social media tools are fitting more into companies’ UC strategies now.
“Social computing is making the leap to integrate with unified-communications applications to add presence and real-time communications abilities to social communities. For example, social applications, including Cisco Quad, IBM Lotus Connections, and Microsoft Office SharePoint, can display a user’s presence status (e.g. online, on a call, unavailable, etc.) in their personal profile page. Microsoft Office Communicator users can search SharePoint profiles for tag information, such as keywords or skills. And Avaya and Siemens are adding the ability to use social services such as Twitter to trigger internal communications events such as sending a tweet to change presence status.”

David Morgenstern writes about Apple’s push into the SMB market space.
“A new sign of greater acceptance by business customers of Apple and the Macintosh is Cupertino’s growing interest in that once 100 percent PC market. Apple is expanding its sales support operation to businesses as well as adding business-centric sections to its retail stores. According to Gary Allen at the IfoAppleStore blog, the new SMB (small, mid-sized) push inside the Apple Store is called Briefing Center, and Cupertino filed a trademark application for the branding. Several stores in the U.S. as well as abroad have these meeting spaces, he said.”

Sean Portnoy shares details about Acer’s holiday lineup of new laptops.
“Rather than choosing sides, Acer has decided that the new notebooks it’s rolling out for the holiday season will feature new graphics tech from either Nvidia or AMD. Some laptops will make use of Nvidia’s 3D Vision feature, some will come with Nvidia Optimus switchable graphics, and still others will feature some of the latest AMD mobile graphics cards. Acer is helping take 3D laptops to more mainstream price points with the $999.99 Aspire AS5745DG, which will become available in late October. As with many other 3D notebooks, it comes with a 15.6-inch screen with 1,366×768 resolution and uses Nvidia 3D Vision tech via the GeForce GT 420M graphics.”
