Sonim Technologies targets the rugged smartphones market

While it may be suitable to pull out that shiny iPhone or Samsung smartphone in many enterprise roles, some jobs call for a tougher device.

Enter Sonim Technologies, a company that specializes in rugged smartphones designed for the construction, manufacturing, oil and gas, transportation and utilities industries.

Two of its latest products, the Sonim XP7 and XP5, are dust, water, oil and chemical, temperature, extreme pressure and drop resistant, according to the company, and can also be used with gloves, feature extra loud speakers and noise-cancellation technology, and even come with a three-year warranty.

The XP5 is a feature phone while the XP7 is a smartphone.

The former features Corning Gorilla Glass, LTE, push-to-talk, WiFi 802.11 a/b/g/n/r 2.4/5GHz mobile hotspot, 4GB Internal storage, 1GB RAM, GSM: 850/900/1800/1900MHz, GPS, 3180mAh Li-Ion battery, FCC, PTCRB, IEEE1725, CEC and Bluethooth SIG certifications, 3.5mm audio and magnetic USB connector, Microphone Dual mic solution with noise cancellation, 5MP fixed focus camera.

The XP7, meanwhile, features Android 4.4 Kit Kat, glove-compatible touch screen, LTE, push-to-talk, WiFi 802.11 a/b/g/n/r with hotspot functions, UMTS 850/900/1900/2100 MHz, GSM 850/900/1800/1900 MHz, 12 GB of storage, MSM8926 1.2 GHz Quad core processor, 1GB RAM, GPS, NFC GPS, GLONASS, NFC, 4800 mAh battery, 137 mm x 72.1 mm x 20.8 mm, FCC, PTCRB, IEEE1725, CEC, Bluetooth SIG, WFA, and IC certifications, 3.5 mm audio and magnetic USB connectors, 4.0” display size, Dual mic solution with noise cancellation speakers, 8 MP and 1 MP rear and front-facing cameras.

The XP5 is available from Bell at $199.95 with a 2-year contract; $399.95 off-contract, and are coming to Telus and Sasktel in the fall, while the XP7 is available from Bell and Telus for around $200 with a 2-year contract and $649.99 off-contract from Bell, and $750 off-contract from Telus.
