Report: Netbooks Now A Fifth Of All Portable Computer Shipments
TechCrunch
Erick Schonfeld writes that market forecaster, DisplaySearch, found that during this year’s second quarter, netbooks made up 22.5 per cent of all portable computer shipments around the world.
“That is up from 5.6 per cent a year ago, and 17.8 per cent in the first quarter of 2009. At this growth rate, netbooks will soon rival larger notebooks. Netbooks, or mini-notes as DisplaySearch calls them, outgrew larger notebook PCs by nearly two to one. It grew 40 per cent quarter over quarter, compared to 22 per cent for larger notebooks. Of course, since netbooks are so much cheaper, the growth in revenues is not proportional. Netbooks are taking the most share in Europe, where they had 32.9 per cent share in the second quarter, followed by North America (26.6 per cent), and China (18.8 per cent)”

Donald Melanson writes about Intel’s Core i5 and Core i7 processors, which are due out next week.
“According to DigiTimes, Intel is set to announce its new Core i5-750, Core i7-860 and Core i7-870 CPUs (and the P55 chipset to go along with ’em) on September 8th, which is almost right in line with some of the earliest rumours on the matter. Details are otherwise a bit light, although DigiTimes’ ‘sources’ estimate that P55-based motherboards could account for as much as 20 per cent of total motherboard shipments by the end of 2009.”
