Q1 PC sales: Bad, but not quite awful
Channel Register
John Oates writes about worldwide PC sales for this year’s first quarter.
“The figures, from IDC, show worldwide desktop and laptop shipments were down 7.1 per cent in the first quarter of 2009 compared to the same period of 2008. Which ain’t good – but it’s better than the 8.2 per cent predicted.”
Gartner: Apple’s U.S. market share slips in Q1 2009
ZD Net
Jason D. O’Grady writes about Apple’s PC market share decline for last year’s fourth quarter in the U.S.
“According to (Gartner’s) report, Apple’s U.S. market share dropped from eight per cent in the fourth quarter of 2008 to 7.4 per cent. Analysts think that Apple’s relatively higher ASP created challenges for it in the tough economy, but that its deft control of inventories limited its shipment decline.”
Symantec Protection Network is it worth the money?
Network World
Larry Chaffin offers his thoughts on a trial of the Symantec Protection Network online storage service.
“I found out the price, I have a 500GB hard drive on my laptop, it will cost me $750.00 a month to back up my hard drive. I have 439GB used on my hard drive in files and e-mails. I think the price is a bit high myself and that is just for a 1 year copy, if I want them to keep my copy for seven years for compliance reasons it is $1125.00 per month. I would skip the product, buy a nice backup drive for your office, invest in a VPN router and do your own backup over the internet over a VPN. It is so much cheaper. Symantec let us all down with this product, the integration to other Symantec products and the horrible cost.”
