Microsoft sees its chance in Googlephone
The Register
Cade Metz reveals why Microsoft is questioning Google’s mobile strategy, with the recent release of its Googlephone, better known as Nexus One.
“Speaking with Bloomberg this past week, Redmond mobile boss Robbie Bach predicted that Google’s decision to serve as both OS provider and handset seller will end up providing an opening for Microsoft. ‘Doing both in the way they are trying to do both is actually very, very difficult,” Bach said. “Google’s announcement sends a signal where they’re going to place their commitment. That will create some opportunities for us and we’ll pursue them.’”

“Lenovo says that Windows 7 will boost demand for its PC products over the next three years.President Rory Read told Bloomberg at the Consumer Electronics Show (CES) that Microsoft’s operating system has already lifted Lenovo’s business in the two months since it was released. ‘We’ve seen better business activity across the planet in the commercial space driven by an interest in Windows 7,” Read told Bloomberg. “I think this is a nice product that’s going to drive demand over the next 12, 24, 36 months.’”
Desktop Virtualization’s Data Center Impact
Network World
Mark Bowker writes why desktop virtualization has huge impacts in data centres.
“Think about what happens in a VDI (virtual desktop infrastructure)implementation in which each employee has a dedicated persistent image. The operating system, applications, user settings, and data that were once stored on a relatively inexpensive endpoint are now consuming high-end, expensive data centre gear. Deploy VDI to thousands, or even tens of thousands, and you have something pretty big going on inside your data centre. VDI deployments will have a giant impact, which is why a companywide VDI deployment is rare. Desktop virtualization deployments that incorporate OS streaming, application virtualization, and folder redirection can have great advantages with much less negativity. Sure, you still need new gear and probably the harder piece will be finding the expertise, but get ready–because it is coming fast.”
