The cost of free file sharing
LA Times
Jon Healey blogs about the love hate relationship between Hollywood and high tech.
” The Associated Press reports that the jury in Capitol v Thomas (formerly Virgin v Thomas) found Jammie Thomas liable today for willfully infringing 24 copyrighted songs and assessed damages of $9,250 per track — well above the $750 minimum, but nowhere near the $150,000 maximum, either. The grand total is a stunning $222,000.”
A $600 Google
Daily Tech
Andrew Campbell blogs the $600 gorilla in the market.
“Google is at it again. No, I’m not talking about pushing the envelope in innovative search and advertising technologies; I’m talking about increasing the wealth of lucky shareholders who have enjoyed a 33.6% gain in price per share (PPS) year to date (YTD). Yesterday the internet behemoth, stock ticker GOOG, broke $600 for the first time. Although the stock has been pushing all time highs for the last month, this psychologically important mark provides a good point for reflection on the how and why of the amazing performance of this stock.”
Wikimedia is moving
Tech Crunch
Erick Schonfeld reports that The Wikimedia Foundation, which runs Wikipedia, along with Wiktionary, Wikibooks, WikiNews, Wikispecies, and other peer-produced content sites, is moving its headquarters from St. Petersburg, Florida to San Francisco in January.
”It should have an easier time recruiting Web developers and engineers, and will be closer to its for-profit sibling, Wikia, which is based in San Mateo. Founder Jimmy Wales is still keeping his residence in Florida.“
