Avaya is streamlining its unified communications platform with the new Avaya Equinox platform, available on mobile and desktop devices, as well as the Avaya Vantage device.
At its core, Avaya Equinox is a fully integrated software-based solution for multimedia communications, collaboration, and conferencing, that enables users to interact using any touch point to support point-to-point communication, web collaboration, as well as high volume audio and high-definition video conferencing. Within an organization, it enables employees to communicate, collaborate, and conference using all forms of media, whether it be voice, video, messaging, or text.
A major component of Avaya Equinox is being mobile. With Equinox, employees can see all scheduled meetings, messaging updates, and communication history in one place, optimized on any device. Equinox also requires no downloads or plugins on a desktop, as it uses WebRTC technology in order to work completely within the browser.
“What [Avaya] is doing is bringing to market a new platform for business communication in the new era of digital experience, what we call the digital era,” said Yogen Patel, vice president and general manager of engagement applications at Avaya, in an interview with CDN. “When you think about business communication, we came through what I’d call the unified communications era, which was primarily around enabling communications using voice, video, and text. Then there was the mobile era, which centered mainly around enabling employees to communicate anytime, anywhere. Now, as we enter the digital era, there is a business focus of making communication between constituents of an organization contextual and simplified by tailoring and building it to fit the specific needs of an organization.”
Behind the Equinox platform is the Avaya Breeze Client SDK. The Client SDK is the enabling technology and platform that Equinox is built upon, and the means and mechanism by which a developer is able to leverage all these pre-built client building blocks that can access and utilize all the communications power that is in the underlying Avaya communications platform. This allows Avaya to tailor its applications to organizations as they need it to their specific business processing.
“[Client SDK] is where the Avaya partner ecosystem comes to play as well,” Patel said. “ For a partner community, Client SDK is critical because it now enables Avaya’s partners to leverage the Client SDK to build applications that integrate communications into their systems. We as Avaya have a certain amount of resources that we can apply to building applications, but we know there is a whole partner ecosystem out there that can take advantage of the Client SDK and build tailored applications into the system verticals.”
An example of partner integration is Humber River Hospital, North America’s first fully digital hospital based out of Toronto, who are using Equinox for a tablet-based application for remote patient monitoring that uses sensors to monitor the vital signs of a patient. If anything were to reach alarming levels, the application automatically initiates communication to the caregiving team, and sets up a video conference bridge that connects the patients with the doctor monitoring the situation, providing instant access and response. All of that is done by building on Client SDK.
