Cloud security firm Afore expands integration with BitLocker

Ottawa-based cloud security and data encryption company Afore Solutions Inc. is integrating its virtual machine security software with Microsoft’s drive encryption platform BitLocker.

Afore’s CloudLink SecureVM already integrates with VMware’s vCloud Hybrid Service, Amazon Web Service and vCloud Hybrid Service. This latest integration expands that list and provides CloudLink users greater flexibility by allowing them to use the software’s VM encryption for both VMware vSphere and Microsoft Hyper-V private clouds.

Organizations will now be able to secure their virtual desktop and server virtual machines (VMs) with native Windows encryption tools and protect virtual machines hosted on leading cloud provider platforms and enterprise virtualized infrastructures, according to Afore. CloudLink SecureVM also supports Linux native encryption, providing organizations with a single encryption management solution for multiple clouds and VM operating systems.

“While BitLocker encryption is widely used in the enterprise, it relies on hardware Trusted Platform Modules (TPM) or USB drives to store encryption keys,” a statement from the company said. “CloudLink SecureVM eliminates the need for keys to be stored on hardware, enabling native OS encryption to be used in virtual desktop infrastructure (VDI) and virtualized server deployments.”

“Enterprises see cloud security as a top priority, but data encryption solutions must leverage existing platforms and operating environments that are already in use in the organization,” said Jonathan Reeves, Afore chief strategy officer. “The CloudLink data security platform protects workloads at multiple layers, enabling businesses, healthcare organizations and governments to confidently reap the economic benefits of cloud adoption.”

SecureVM secures both boot and data volumes with a centralized approach that allows IT departments to manage OS boot security policy rather than relying on individual users. Users get full control of the encryption keys for both Windows and Linux VMs deployed throughout their hybrid cloud, validating the integrity of virtual machines before they are allowed to boot.

Key benefits of the integrated CloudLink solution include:

  • VM encryption for Amazon Web Services, Microsoft Azure, VMware vCloud Hybrid Service
  • VM encryption for VMware vSphere and Microsoft Hyper-V private clouds
  • Ensures data is protected from other cloud tenants and cloud service provider admins
  • Flexible encryption key control, enabling customers to determine where and how keys are stored
