AUSTIN, TEX. – Dell officially took the wraps off its Cloud Marketplace today at Dell World 2014 as the company released a public beta of the program.
The Dell Cloud Marketplace is being offered in partnership with Amazon Web Services, the Google Cloud Platform and a new cloud provider entrant Joyent Inc.
Founded in 2004, Joyent is San Francisco-based cloud services provider that also specializes in application virtualization.
Nnamdi Orakwue, Dell’s vice president of software strategy operations and cloud said beyond the cloud providers Dell forged other cloud alliances with Delphix, Docker and Pertino to address customer cloud concerns. Delphix, Docker and Pertino also augment Dell’s Cloud Marketplace offering, he added.
Dell channel chief Cheryl Cook told CDN that she and her team are currently working with the Cloud Marketplace public beta program for channel partner enablement.
“We are working on that as we speak. We do have the cloud builder competency in North America and we offer than to Certified partners and they can participate in the Dell Cloud Marketplace public beta to find opportunities where they can deliver their services, but we still need to flush that out to see if we have the right business model,” she said.
Orakwue said the Dell Cloud Marketplace took a year to build and will have a self-service approach along with free support for CIOs and IT admin staff. He added that it was based on a vision where dell.com would be the central hub.
“Our point of view to selling cloud is on dell.com because it’s an e-commerce engine and the vision here was ‘wouldn’t it be awesome to tell people we have a one stop shop for cloud, software and solutions for buyers and sellers we enable customers to buy a virtual machine on dell.com where it can be provisioned with application containers and a policy engine wrapped around it,” Orakwue said.
The Dell Cloud Marketplace is targeted at the mid-market starting with 100 employee environments but Orakwue said it could scale down to smaller operations.
As for the cloud alliance partners Pertino is supplying cloud networking and VPN. Delphix will provide data management for replication, mirroring and back up. Docker will take care of application development with its DockerHub that will make approximately 40,000 containers available in the Dell Cloud Marketplace.
“We help customers have choice and avoid vendor lock-in. Customers, we found, want multiple clouds and the freedom to go in and out of clouds,” Orakwue added.
Dell is offering a promotion at Dell World for the Dell Cloud Marketplace. By signing up you will receive a $500 credit on all services purchased for three months.
