Just two months after Lenovo officially closed its deal with IBM and its x86 business unit, the vendor announced two new rack servers.
These new servers are in addition to the company’s next-generation Lenovo ThinkServer line up. The entry 1U ThinkServer RD350 and the storage-rich, 2U ThinkServer RD450 servers are being targeted for the small-to-medium-sized businesses market as well as internal departments of larger enterprises who are looking to balance performance with storage capacity at a more cost effective price point.
These two new units are starting at $1,249 for the RD350. The RD450 is priced at $1,499.
The two models will be powered by the latest 12-core Intel Xeon E5-2600 v3 series processors and cane be configured with up to 512GB of DDR4 memory through 16 DIMM slots.
Another interesting aspect of the RD350 and RD450 ThinkServers is that they have been redesigned with a focus on space-optimization. The drive trays, chassis and system boards have all be re-built to provide additional storage density and I/O capability within standard 1U and 2U form factors. The RD350, for example, can supports up to 16TB of internal storage, but in a slimmer, more condensed form factor.
The RD450 2.5-inch configuration also leverages Lenovo’s ThinkServer AnyRAID adapters to provide advanced data protection without taking up PCIe slots. Both servers are available with 80 PLUS Titanium or Platinum-rated power supplies. According to Lenovo, Titanium and Platinum provide an increased in performance efficiency over Gold, which is standard for the industry.
With both new ThinkServer systems have a suite of lifecycle tools for management including server-embedded tools for configuration and deployment, energy management and power planning.
