BARCELONA, SPAIN – Data growth is out of control and HP, with the release of three new storage products, is attempting to harness the data for enterprise customers and protect from disaster.
According to David Scott, the senior vice president and GM of HP Storage, said at the HP Discover conference that the volume of data in the last decade has increased 50 fold based mostly on human and machine data from sensors. And, of that data growth in the last two years has skyrocketed by 90 per cent.
To address the massive data growth in the marketplace, HP released: HP StoreOnce Backup for managing exponential data growth by protecting more data in less time, while reducing business risk and workflow disruption; HP StoreAll Archive for extracting big data into actionable insight from large-scale data repositories using open object storage interfaces for cloud apps; and HP 3Par StoreServ, a flash-optimized storage solution for virtualization and IT-as-a-Service environments.
“The speed and the size of the data is massive and this is creating a set of avoidable disasters for customers. If they can’t recover data fast enough they will not be able to make decisions on revenue generating transactions,” Scott said. He added that the cost of planned downtime is 250,000 Euros per hour ($365,458.65) for an organization with at least 600 TB of data. It can also take up to 80 hours for that same organization to recovery its data. The StoreOnce product can recover that data in eight hours leading to an 18 million Euro business impact. It can also securely back up 237 per cent more data in an IT-as-a-Service or cloud consolidation.
Scott also introduced a first of its kind guarantee from HP. Called Get Protected Guarantee, if a customer does not achieve at least 95 per cent data reduction with its deduplication technology from acquired 3Par line, HP will refund the cost. This does not take into account audio and video data. For that HP guarantees 20 per cent reduction.
Scott added that HP will bring OpenStack support to the HP StoreAll platform, which will help with business development in the cloud along with securing data.
“As you can see this is a bad day for Cisco and VCE,” Scott said.
