In response to the growing number of cloud providers seeking more capacity, Root Data Center is expanding its MTL-R2 facility in Montreal, adding an additional 6MW of power capacity, the company announced Tuesday.
The first of the new data halls is under construction and is slated for a June 2018 completion date, with the second following by late summer. Root says it’s committing to the Montreal area where large companies such as Amazon, which recently opened a cluster of data centres, and Microsoft and Google, are setting up shop.
“Root’s ability to expand and rapidly deploy capacity for our customer allows them to grow their operations as quickly as they need to support the massive acceleration of cloud growth in Canada, and technology sector growth in Montréal,” said AJ Byers, president and CEO of the company. “As the demand for data center solutions in Montréal continues to rise, our ability to effectively expand infrastructure, power and space in short time frames not only benefits our customers, but the region’s tech ecosystem and the city’s economy.”
The area’s cooler climate and focus on renewable energy is also an attractive element for solution providers, Byers told CDN in a previous interview.
“It ultimately drives down cost while being energy-conscious,” he said.
