Larry Dignan writes about recent media tablet shipment results from IDC.
“IDC said that 10.1 million media tablets were shipped in the fourth quarter and to no one’s surprise Apple and its iPad dominated. However, Samsung’s Galaxy Tab walked away with 17 per cent market share. What remains to be seen is how the availability of the iPad 2 on Friday changes the equation in the first and second quarters. According to IDC’s statement: Apple’s tablet share fell from 93 per cent in the third quarter to 73 per cent in the fourth. Samsung’s Galaxy Tab had 17 per cent share in the fourth quarter, but isn’t expected to keep it for long. Samsung is prepping a larger Galaxy Tab based on Android 3.0 Honeycomb.”

Heather Clancy writes about HP’s new Energy and Sustainability Management (ESM) offering.
“Hewlett-Packard is launching a suite of technology-enabled sustainability management services. Packaged under the broad name, HP Energy and Sustainability Management (ESM), HP has packaged up nine different services that are aimed at helping companies create a more unified approach to their sustainability strategy, using IT (of course) to help keep everything in line. Jay Allardyce, worldwide director, growth initiatives, Energy and Sustainability Management, HP Enterprise Business, says many of the specific energy and carbon management activities of enterprise businesses are managed local, ‘although the company needs to have a unified voice.’ HP aims to help companies find that voice through these services.”
To Tablet or Not to Tablet? That is the Question
The VAR Guy
The VAR Guy shares some thoughts to help tablet fans decide whether or not they actually need to buy one.
“You may not actually need a tablet. Despite all the buzz around their functionality and ease of use in the post-PC world, your best bet could be to re-evaluate what your priorities are and see if the money you’d invest in a tablet wouldn’t be better spent on something else. Maybe an upgrade to your laptop, or maybe a new work machine altogether. Tablets are considered the ‘third screen’ in a world where the first is a computer and the second is the smartphone. If your daily tasks are easily completed without a third screen, you may be a candidate for just simply saving your money. Don’t kid yourself – if you’re not a multitasker, too many devices could just spell trouble.”
