Virtualization and cloud infrastructure solution vendor VMware made a number of announcements this week at its VMworld Europe conference in Barcelona, Spain around desktop as a service (DaaS), mobility and cloud computing.
The vendor’s DaaS solutions will get a boost with the acquisition of Desktone, a DaaS vendor with a multi-tenant desktop virtualization platform for delivering Windows desktops and applications as a cloud service. The acquisition closed earlier this month.
“Desktone is a leader in desktop-as-a-service and has a complete and proven blueprint for enabling service providers to deliver DaaS,” said Sanjay Poonen, executive vice-president and general manager for end-user computing with VMware, in a statement. “By bringing Desktone’s innovative platform in house, VMware can accelerate the delivery of DaaS through its network of over 11,000 VMware service provider partners while helping to shape and lead the future of the industry.”

Expect the Desktone platform to be integrated with VMware Horizon View, adding capabilities such as multi-tenancy, self-service of virtual desktops, grid-based architecture for elastic scalability and low cost of delivery.
VMware also announced a number of updates to VMware Horizon Suite, its platform for connecting mobile workers to their data, applications and desktops from any device. The updates include support for new delivery models with Horizon View 5.3, enhanced Windows 7 migration in Horizon Mirage 4.3, and support for Sony’s new Xperia Z1 and Z Ultra smartphones in Horizon Workspace.
Finally, VMware announced new capabilities and enhancements to its portfolio of cloud management solutions, with updates to VMware vCloud Automation Center 6.0, VMware vCenter Operations Management Suite 5.8, VMware IT Business Management Suite, and VMware vCenter Log Insight 1.5
This will make VMware more competitive in the desktop
market. They have been dominant in the
virtualization world, and with this acquisition VMware will enhance their DaaS
capabilities. DaaS is an expanding
market with the end of Windows XP, as companies looking for XP replacements are
re-evaluating how they handle desktops for end users. VMware’s name should give them a foot in the
door, especially for companies already using VMware virtualization for their
servers.
