Rackspace Hosting of San Antonio, Tex., has added Brocade Vyatta vRouter to its portfolio of networking and security solutions for the Rackspace Hybrid Cloud.
The new Brocade Vyatta vRouter is a software network appliance that offers a customer-selectable software image for configuring firewalls and providing security. The solution also provides Virtual Private Network (VPN) gateway functionality and other networking services, such as network address translation (NAT) and routing.
John Engates, CTO at Rackspace, said expanding the reach of the hybrid cloud portfolio gives customers and channel partners more choices for security and networking solutions to use across their public, private and dedicated cloud environments. To complement existing physical firewall capabilities, the Brocade Vyatta vRouter now delivers virtual firewall and advanced networking solutions that enable customers to connect their data centers with the Rackspace Hybrid Cloud.
The Brocade Vyatta vRouter adds to the breadth of Rackspace’s networking solutions, which consist of physical firewalls and load balancers, as well as global traffic management, threat management, web application firewall and log management capabilities in the hybrid cloud. The flexibility to select between physical and virtual devices allows customers to choose the right solution to meet the unique networking and security needs of their business.
The Hybrid cloud also provides customers with a path to grow within Rackspace’s portfolio. Today, customers can leverage virtual appliances and then move to physical devices for networking and security services as their business and application needs evolve.
The Brocade Vyatta vRouter features a variety of capabilities, including:
- VPN: With support for site-to-site and remote access, customers can build a VPN tunnel from their data centre to the Rackspace Hybrid Cloud.
- Firewall: Security for cloud infrastructure with a network-based firewall that performs stateful IPv4/v6 packet inspection to intercept and inspect network activity, while protecting critical data.
- NAT: Provision application and database servers without public network interfaces.
- Routing: By using Cloud Networks you can build application tiers on different isolated networks.
According to the company, the ongoing threat of cyber attacks, this on-demand solution is ideal for businesses needing to store valuable information. E-commerce companies in particular are able to leverage the Brocade Vyatta vRouter and its firewall capabilities to enhance security around stored customer data and online transaction information.
Businesses using site-to-site VPN applications will also benefit from the software networking appliance, as it gives them the ability to add more utility-based resources and increase capacity outside their local data centre.
Kelly Herrell, vice president and general manager of Software Networking at Brocade, said the Rackspace and Brocade share a vision of an open cloud that enables customers to control not only their applications, but also the networks that service them.
