McAfee alters end point security strategy

Security vendor expands its end point portfolio to support the new market direction

Las Vegas – McAfee at its Focus 2012 Conference, held here, outlined a new direction with its line up of end point security products.

According to Candace Worley, senior vice president and GM of the McAfee Endpoint Security Group, McAfee will make available four new end point security products that will provide dynamic policy depending on the user’s context.

The reason for the switch in product direction is because end users are carrying multiple devices that are owned by the individual and a corporation, Worley said.

“What we are seeing is people have a corporate laptop, a smartphone and a tablet. The tablet is for downloading apps, surfing the net and maybe getting some corporate email. The corporate laptop is locked down and you have set number of apps. However, where I am in the world my dictate what policy should apply. If I’m in a Starbucks in Beijing and I want to access the server to see my next quarter financials I may get locked down or get access to certain data and apps,” Worley said.

Under this new product direction, McAfee released Deep Defender 1.5, End Point Encryption for PC or Mac 7, Application Control 6.1 and Enterprise Mobility Manager 10.2.

Deep Defender 1.5, under the DeepSafe platform developed in conjunction with Intel Corp., increases the scope of day zero root kit protection and will include master boot record root-kits, which are the source of many stealth financial and identity stealing attacks.

End point Encryption for PC or Mac will be integration with Intel AMT technology and McAfee ePO Deep Command modules. This will allow for secure and remote management of powered off or disabled devices including devices using Windows 8 “Near Native” performance on SSD drives.

Application Control 6.1 features enhancements that take whitelisting beyond the common desktop environment. Worley said it will now give IT managers control over how a non-whitelisted application can be approved by delivering an innovative user approval technology.

Finally, Enterprise Mobility Manager 10.2 now integrates both the secure container functionality and McAfee’s Virus Scan Mobile product to provide additional security and management for devices using the open Android platform or Apple iOS 6.

From a channel partner perspective, Worley said it will “definitely take education for the channel to learn more about delivering dynamic and context aware security solutions.”

However, Worley believes the market is already pushing the channel in that direction because the customer infrastructure is evolving that way. “The benefit I see for the channel is the services opportunities. They can now provide security services with context aware security as a service offering and develop policies around that making for a huge opportunity for them,” Worley added.
