Network World reported that security firm Sophos today apologized for wreaking havoc in its customers’ networks after a faulty update to its anti-virus software yesterday caused false positives for certain malware to occur on Windows-based computers.

Sophos has to be careful in the marketplace these days. Security competitors are challenging them every step of the way with better margin incentives and more product offerings.

The last time I spoke to a Sophos channel executive she told me they offer five per cent of margins. That is not enough to move the dial especially when McAfee last year aggressive came out with 25 per cent margins.

And, lets face another fact end point security products produce stagnant margins and channel partners cannot make enough to sustain their business with that. I am not saying that Sophos only makes end point security products but channel partners are savvy enough to compare offerings from other security vendors.

This is bad timing for Sophos for sure but it is clear to me they need to get going with their channel partners to increase margins and offer more.
